Walnut Burl Shift Knob

Burl & Detent

Burl & Detent is a one bench shop behind a tire yard on the north side of Missoula, Montana, run by Dale Kovacic, who built cabinets for twenty years and kept every walnut burl offcut too pretty to throw away. He turns each shift knob on a small lathe, sets a brass insert cut to the thread of the buyer's car, and rubs in four coats of tung oil over a week so the grain stays warm under a cold hand in January.
