Waxed Canvas Rain Smock

Gusset & Slicker

Gusset & Slicker is a two person workroom above a net loft on Marine Drive in Astoria, Oregon, run by Ingrid Halvorsen, who mended gillnets for fourteen years before she started sewing rain gear for the crew. She buys plain unbleached cotton canvas, rubs a blend of beeswax and paraffin into it by hand, irons the wax through with a hot iron, and sews each smock with underarm gussets so the wearer can haul a line overhead without the hem riding up.
