Sedgebank Luffa

Sedgebank Luffa is a two acre farm outside Mission, Texas, run by Rosa and Teodoro Garza, who planted a row of luffa gourds for the grandchildren in 2019 and now grow four hundred vines on cattle panel arches. The gourds hang until the skins turn brown and rattle, then the family peels them by hand, rinses out the seeds in a stock tank, and dries the sponges in the sun on window screens for three days. Nothing is bleached, so each sponge keeps its own shade of gold.
