Whorl & Peg

Whorl & Peg is a two person toy workshop in a former creamery in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Nell turns the tops on an old treadle converted lathe and her father sands and paints them at the bench by the window. Each top starts as a square blank of rock maple from a sawmill twelve miles up the Connecticut River, is turned round in about eight minutes, then gets three rings of milk paint and a coat of beeswax. There is no plastic, no glue and no finish that a child could chip off and swallow.
