Foolscap Union works out of the second floor of a former shoe factory on Jackson Street in Lowell, Massachusetts. Renata Vogel sets the type and Amos Nkemelu runs the press, printing handwriting and drafting workbooks on a 1918 Chandler and Price platen press. Every book is sewn in signatures by hand, so it opens flat on a desk and a child can write across the gutter without holding the page down.
A shop that sells to two buyers at once. A parent buying one workbook and a school buying forty of them need different things from the same page, and this layout gives the header a search field and a stacked category row so a teacher looking for grade three ruling gets there in one click instead of scrolling a hero. It suits any store with real categories behind it: books, classroom supplies, art materials, tools, parts. If the catalogue is one product and a story, one of the editorial themes in the gallery will serve better than this one.
The style is Marketplace on the red variant rather than the blue one. Paper and pencil photography is grey and cream across the whole frame, so a blue button reads as another cool neutral and gets lost, while red is the only warm saturated thing on the page and the eye lands on it without being told. The three fact lines about sewn signatures, letterpress ruling and eraser tolerance sit high, above the category panels, because a school buyer comparing a 24 dollar workbook against a 4 dollar one is looking for the reason and leaves if the reason is three scrolls down. The header keeps the search field on a phone rather than hiding it behind a menu icon, since a buyer with a supply list in hand types a product name and does not browse.
