The brief this store was built from

Ninebark Hound works out of a converted feed store in Salida, Colorado, four blocks from the Arkansas River. Two people run it: a former Forest Service sawyer who spent nine seasons cutting trail with a dog on a lead, and a sewer who came over from a canvas shop that made raft frames. They buy tubular nylon climbing webbing by the spool, cut it in house, and bar tack every anchor point on a walking foot machine. The store sells one lead in two lengths.

Product
Traverse Trail Lead, $54
About it
A 1.8 metre lead in tubular climbing webbing, with a brass swivel snap and a sewn traffic handle. It dries in twenty minutes after a river crossing.
Brand facts
Sewn from 25mm tubular nylon climbing webbing, the same spool stock used for anchor slings. Every anchor point is bar tacked, forty two stitches, not a straight run of lockstitch. Solid brass swivel snap so river grit grinds the metal instead of a plated coating.
Style
Adventure. Outdoor brand — huge italic serif heading, no CTA

Who this theme is for

A pet brand built around the outdoors, and more broadly any maker whose product is photographed in weather rather than in a studio. Leads, packs, cots, water bowls, anything that ends up dirty in the pictures. The Adventure preset runs a very large italic serif heading over a full bleed photograph with no button competing against it, which suits a first screen where the photo is the argument and the price is not. It works for a catalog of two to six products and falls apart past about twenty, because the layout gives every product a lot of room and there is no filtering shelf to fall back on.

What was decided in the brief

Terracotta primary on a warm off white, with a deep forest accent held back for the price and the add to cart. Dog photography outdoors is already green: pine, wet grass, river willow. Running a green interface on top of that flattens the picture, so the interface takes the opposite side of the wheel and the forest tone appears only twice a page, which keeps the two greens from arguing. Headings are set in an italic serif at a size that would look absurd on a product with a spec sheet and reads correctly on one with a story. The three brand facts sit under the hero as plain lines because webbing, stitch and hardware are the three things a buyer checks before length.

What is in the ZIP

  • A single-product homepage: hero, trust strip, benefits, how-to-use or specs, reviews, final call to action.
  • The whole store shell: product, collection, cart, search and 404 templates, header, footer, announcement bar.
  • Valid Shopify 2.0 sections with schema, so every line of text is editable in the Shopify editor.
  • The photos you see in the preview, ready to swap for your own.

Questions

Is this Shopify theme really free to download?
Yes. You get a complete Shopify 2.0 theme ZIP and no account is needed. In your Shopify admin open Online Store, then Themes, then Add theme, then Upload zip file.
The hero has no button. Will that hurt my conversions?
The Adventure preset puts the first buying control below the hero rather than on top of it, on the featured product. If you want a button in the hero, the hero section has a button label and link pair in the theme editor. Fill the label in and it appears.
My photos are outdoors and inconsistent. Do they need editing first?
No. Every image frame is fixed ratio with the photo set to cover, so a vertical phone shot and a wide camera shot both crop to the same frame instead of changing the height of the row. Mixed exposure is the thing that shows, not mixed aspect ratio.
