How much do Shopify apps really cost? (the hidden monthly tax)

Shopify apps are priced to feel harmless. "Just $8/month" for a sticky cart. "Only $10/month" for urgency timers. Individually, none of them hurt. The problem is that nobody installs one app — and by the time your store has the conversion features shoppers expect, you are quietly paying a few hundred dollars a year for things your theme could have shipped with.

The six apps almost every store ends up with

These are the conversion features merchants reach for first, with typical Shopify App Store prices:

  • Sticky add-to-cart — ~$10/mo
  • Urgency / countdown timers — ~$10/mo
  • Size guide — ~$7/mo
  • Wishlist — ~$20/mo
  • Instagram feed — ~$8/mo
  • Bundles / volume discounts — ~$10/mo

That's roughly $65/month — about $780 a year, every year, for six features that aren't exotic. And that's the conservative list. Add reviews, a popup builder, upsells, and a back-in-stock notifier and the typical mid-sized store is closer to $120+/month.

Why the cost is sneakier than it looks

  • It compounds. App fees are recurring. $65/month isn't a one-time cost — it's $780 this year, $780 next year, forever.
  • It slows your store. Each app injects its own scripts. Five or six of them and your page speed (and your Core Web Vitals, and your SEO) takes a real hit.
  • It's fragile. Apps update on their own schedule, conflict with each other, and break on theme changes. Every one is a dependency you don't control.

What's actually worth paying for

To be fair, some apps earn their keep — your email/SMS platform, a serious reviews tool with UGC, a real subscriptions engine. Those are products, not features. The waste is paying monthly rent for basic conversion mechanics — sticky cart, trust badges, countdown timers, quick buy — that a competent theme should simply include.

How to cut most of the app tax

The single biggest lever is your theme. If the conversion features are built into the theme itself, you cancel the apps that were only ever patching a gap. That's the entire idea behind Themr: it generates a complete Shopify 2.0 theme with sticky cart, trust badges, countdown timers, quick buy, announcement carousel, and more built in — so you're not renting them from six different developers. The paid tier is less than the cost of a single conversion app, and even the free starter themes ship those sections.

Run the math on your own store: open your Shopify billing, add up the apps that are really just conversion features, and multiply by 12. For most merchants that number is the easiest few hundred dollars a year they'll ever save.
