The brief this store was built from
Caliche & Coil is a two person pottery on a dirt lot outside Silver City, New Mexico. A retired soil technician and her neighbour dig red clay from an arroyo bank, sieve it, and build every olla by hand from coils on a banding wheel. The pots are burnished with a river stone, fired in a pit under juniper and cow dung, and left unglazed so water seeps slowly through the wall to the roots around it. A firing yields about forty pots, and roughly one in eight cracks.
- Product
- Garden Olla, 2 Litre, $42
- About it
- A coil built, pit fired terracotta olla that holds 2 litres and is buried to its neck beside your plants. Water seeps through the unglazed wall to the roots as the soil dries, so a bed of squash or tomatoes gets a slow drink instead of a daily hose.
- Brand facts
- The clay is dug from one arroyo bank four miles north of town and sieved through window screen. Each olla is pit fired under juniper for about nine hours and left unglazed on purpose. One filling of a 2 litre olla waters a 60 centimetre circle of bed for three to five days in July.
- Style
- Clean Minimal. Minimal & clean — lowercase logo, sharp buttons
Who this theme is for
A maker in home and garden with one or two things that do a practical job: a watering pot, a trowel, a seed tray, a planter. The Clean Minimal preset keeps a lowercase logo, square buttons and a lot of white space, so the photograph and the plain explanation of how the thing works carry the page. It fits a catalogue of one to twenty items where each needs a sentence of instruction. It is the wrong pick for a nursery with hundreds of plants and weekly specials, since the spare layout has no room for a busy promotions grid.
What was decided in the brief
A terracotta primary with a dusty olive accent on a warm off white. The pots are the colour of the clay they come from, so the buttons borrow that red instead of adding a garden green that every seed company already owns, and the olive only marks secondary links. The three facts answer what a gardener asks before buying an olla: where the clay comes from, why it is unglazed, and how far one filling goes in a hot month. A nine hour pit firing and a 60 centimetre watering circle are details a buyer can check against their own bed.

Questions
- Is this Shopify theme really free to download?
- Yes. You get a complete Shopify 2.0 theme ZIP and no account is needed. In your Shopify admin open Online Store, then Themes, then Add theme, then Upload zip file.
- How should I explain how a garden product is used on the product page?
- Write the product description as two short parts: one sentence on what the product is, then two or three sentences on how to use it, such as how deep to bury it and how often to fill it. Buyers of practical garden tools read the instructions before the price, so keep them in the description rather than on a separate page.
- Can I swap the terracotta colour for my own brand colour?
- Yes. Open the theme editor, go to Theme settings, then Colors, and change the primary colour. Buttons and links follow that setting, so one change repaints the store.
