The brief this store was built from

Hoarfrost Alpine runs out of half a machine shop on the north side of Bozeman, Montana, behind a bicycle frame builder who rents them the lathe time. Two people: a machinist who spent six years cutting head tubes, and a ski patroller who broke enough poles on Bridger Bowl to have opinions about lock torque. They buy 7075 aluminium tubing by the length, turn and slot it in house, and send it out to be anodised nine miles away. The store sells one pole in two lengths.

Product
Bridger Fixed Pole, 130 cm, $129
About it
A two section trekking pole in 7075 aluminium with an anodised shaft and a cork grip that takes about a season to match a hand. It packs to 71 centimetres and weighs 212 grams.
Brand facts
Turned from 7075 aluminium tubing at a 1.4 millimetre wall, not the 6061 that most collapsible poles use. The lock is set to 6 newton metres on a torque driver before it ships, and the number is written on the tag. Two lengths only, 120 and 130 centimetres, because the third length sold four units in a year and was dropped.
Style
Tech Impact. Tech/audio brand — bold sans heading, pill buttons

Who this theme is for

A brand whose product is bought on numbers. Outdoor hardware, tools, bike parts, anything where a buyer wants the weight, the alloy and the dimension before they want the story. The Tech Impact preset runs a heavy sans heading, pill buttons and a short hero, so the first screen states what the thing is and gets out of the way, and the specification lines sit high on the page instead of below a fold. It carries a catalogue of one to ten products comfortably. It is the wrong preset for a brand sold on mood, because the type is too loud to sit under a soft photograph and there is nowhere for a long maker essay to go.

What was decided in the brief

Cobalt primary on near white, with amber held back for the price and the add to cart. Every other theme published here this month has been warm: terracotta, ochre, forest, brass. Alpine photography is the one niche where a cool interface is correct rather than contrarian, because the source images are already blue in the shadows and white everywhere else, and a warm interface on top of snow reads as a filter someone forgot to remove. So the interface takes the colour that is already in the picture and the amber does the one job colour should do on a page like this, which is to mark the two places a hand goes. The three facts run as plain lines under the hero because alloy, wall thickness and lock torque are the argument, and inside a paragraph they stop being numbers and start being adjectives.

What is in the ZIP

  • A single-product homepage: hero, trust strip, benefits, how-to-use or specs, reviews, final call to action.
  • The whole store shell: product, collection, cart, search and 404 templates, header, footer, announcement bar.
  • Valid Shopify 2.0 sections with schema, so every line of text is editable in the Shopify editor.
  • The photos you see in the preview, ready to swap for your own.

Questions

Is this Shopify theme really free to download?
Yes. You get a complete Shopify 2.0 theme ZIP and no account is needed. In your Shopify admin open Online Store, then Themes, then Add theme, then Upload zip file.
I sell one product with a long spec list. Where does that go?
The featured product block carries three short fact lines under the hero, and the product page carries the full list in the description. Keep the three lines to the numbers a buyer decides on and put the rest lower down. Three is the count the layout is built around, so a fourth line pushes the buying control off a phone screen.
Does the blue work if my photos are warm rather than cold?
Less well, and the fix is one setting. Primary, secondary, accent, background and text are five colour settings in the theme editor, and every button, link, border and price reads from them. Change the primary to a warm tone and the whole page follows. The accent appears in only two places, so it is the safest of the five to experiment with.
